Psychogenic Seizures and Childhood Sexual Abuse

Maranville, with extensive experience in sexual trauma and forensics, explains that PNES are physical manifestations of psychological distress, often misdiagnosed as epilepsy, and highlights the lack of societal understanding regarding trauma's long-term physical symptoms. She emphasizes that these seizures are not feigned but are unconscious expressions of trauma the mind cannot articulate, affecting brain pathways and potentially causing permanent changes. The presentation also touches upon common symptoms, the difficulty in medical diagnosis, the importance of belief and empathetic treatment for recovery, and the role of trauma-informed care in addressing this complex issue.
