WIFI Jamming: How it's being used

Jun 3

Wifi jammers are devices that intentionally disrupt wireless signals in a specific area. While they're illegal to use in most places, including the United States [FCC jamming devices], thieves have been exploiti
ng them to target security systems, especially those reliant on WiFi.
Here's how it works:

Confusing the Network:
Jammers don't necessarily deactivate cameras, but rather overwhelm the WiFi network with a bunch of extra traffic. This "jams" the signal and makes it difficult for the camera to transmit footage or receive instructions.

Easier Targets:
Thieves are looking for weaknesses, and wifi-dependent cameras are a prime target. These jammers are relatively cheap and easy to acquire online, making them a tempting tool for criminals [Futurism wifi jammers].

There have been several news reports about this recently:
Los Angeles: The LAPD warned about a group using jammers to disarm cameras in the Wilshire area [Government Technology wifi jammers].

Minnesota: Police in Edina suspect a string of robberies involved a jammer to knock out security cameras [Tom's Hardware wifi jamming cameras].

Here are some additional tips to consider:

Layered Security:
Don't rely solely on wifi cameras. Consider a mix of wired and wireless systems for better coverage.

Cellular Backup: Some camera systems can connect to cellular networks if wifi is unavailable.

Signs and Awareness: Posting signs that you have a security system can deter break-ins. By being aware of these tactics and taking precautions, you can make it harder for thieves to target your home.

TSJ WiFi 5GH

The powerful out put of this unit provides for a large perimeter of coverage, protecting you from wireless surveillance cameras, WiFi transmissions (both 2.4GHz and 5GHz) as well as Bluetooth communications.

How Wifi "Jamming" Works

This example is actually demonstrating a "Deauthorization" attack but most people may still call this type of attack as a Jamming attack but this is a good demonstration on how this works.
